Who We Are
Hello, we are the Light Savers, a club dedicated to helping the environment. We are local kids from Perry, Ohio who enjoy nature so much that we want to make sure that its around for future generations. Our goal is to reduce the use of energy that produces greenhouse gas emissions in the world because this adds to climate change. If kids like us are trying to make a change for a better planet, you can too! If all of us work together and use less electricity, we can make a BIG change. "Power Down" with us!!!
What We Have Accomplished
We have improved our school's carbon footprint by supplying four rooms with motion light sensors that turn the lights off when people leave the room. This would save approximately 1035 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released! We did this by raising money through a bake sale at our school. We also influenced teachers to use less electricity by encouraging to use half the lights, turn off the lights when they leave the room, and use natural lighting when they possible. We did this by presenting information to the teachers about why using less electricity helps the planet, hanging up posters around our school, and talking with students. Teachers and students made pledges to "Power Down." This means they agreed to turn off lights when they left a room, turn off the T.V. when they aren't watching it, play outside more instead of playing on the computer, and many more ideas. We are also entering in our Power Down project idea into a really great competition, called the Lexus Eco Challenge - check it out here if you want to learn more (http://lexus.scholastic.com/).
What We Hope to Accomplish
Climate change is a global problem that will affect all of our lives because we all need the environment and its resources to survive. We would like to influence people from all over OUR planet to "Power Down" with us. We are trying to spread the word about this through a video our group made. Please watch and share our video. You can help by sharing the information and completing pledges to reduce your electricity usage at home. We hope to reach people on all seven continents and all 50 U.S. states. We need your help to do this!
